Disney Trip 2011 - Day 2
By 7:30 PM, we were all completely wiped out. I’m sitting on the bed, watching people flock out of Downtown Disney by the hundreds, all wearing their 8 dollar Disneyland ponchos that were made in China. It’s been raining since 3:00 and the wind is picking up. It’s glorious here. I’m not even joking.
We started the day at 6 AM. We walked downstairs and met up with Leah at La Brea Bakery Cafe for breakfast and then headed to Disneyland. Kenny wanted to sleep in and we allowed it… this once. The kids and Leah wanted to go on Indiana Jones first and we tried to convince them to go on Pirates of the Caribbean. Leah decided they were going to go by themselves and meet up with us later (oh darn.) So off they went and Chad and I just wandered down Main Street together. Our pace slowed immensely, and we just strolled. We headed to Frontierland and were the only two there. We walked over to New Orleans Square and were 2 of 6 people over there. It was such a perfect morning! We got on Pirates and it was so dead that the boat in front of us and the boat behind us were completely empty.
We’ve been trying to convince the kids to go to Tom Sawyer’s Island with us and they never want to, so we went by ourselves and climbed the trails, ran across rickety rope bridges, crawled through caves (whose tunnels were obviously not built for adults in their 30’s to play in) nearly knocking over every child that got in our way. We explored and played and wished we lived there. Alison called and said they were almost ready to meet back up and we were kind of sad to leave the island. But we headed over to Sleeping Beauty’s Castle to stand on the gold (brass) stake that used to mark the geographical center of the park (it’s the little things that entertain us.)
After meeting up with Leah and the kids, we met Kenny and spent the day at California Adventure. We wanted to ride California Screamin’ and as we were moving through line, we overheard Leah telling Kenny, “Kenny, this place has great sandwiches,” knowing that if he knew what he was in for he wouldn’t come. Kenny is fun to trick. It was so funny to listen to the two of them scream their lips off on the roller coaster. We spent some time at Paradise Pier, where a couple approached Ashley and gave her a Mickey Mouse doll they’d just won. Watching her carry that thing around the park, stroking his nose and cuddling him was really sweet. She even got him a pair of 3D glasses when we went to Muppet Vision. By the time we got out of the Muppet show, it was pouring. We decided to buy ponchos, change our clothes and head back out. We have a private entrance from our hotel into California Adventure, so it was a quick 5 minute walk to our room. We were soaked by the time we got there. Kenny quit on us and went back to the warmth and comfort of the hotel. Boo. Chad bought us all ponchos and it was back to Disneyland for us. There were a lot of die hards out there with us and we lasted another couple hours in the rain. It wasn’t until we came up from the warm and muggy air of Pirates that we realized how bone-chilling cold it really was.
Back at the hotel Leah took the kids swimming in the rain (somehow she passes for an adult, but she is really just a big kid.) Chad and I stayed in our room and I fell asleep. I FELL… ASLEEP! Whatever…. Like YOU don’t take naps? You probably actually don’t. This is embarrassing. I am such an old lady.
Chad and the kids picked up dinner and brought it back to the room. We sat on our beds eating and watching Wheel of Fortune. I have a rule that you are not allowed to guess any of the words in the puzzle until you have the entire puzzle figured out. I hate it when people blurt out, “Something something to the something something!!!” It’s one of my biggest pet peeves in the world. I’m sure it’s one of yours as well.
Housekeeping just stopped by and asked if we needed anything and then gave the kids a handful of chocolate coins with Disney characters printed on them. This place just keeps getting better.
Here’s a little observation I made regarding those character hats they sell at the parks. You know what I’m talking about: The Goofy hat with the big floppy ears… the Giant Mad Hatter hat… The Jack Sparrow bandana with attached-dreads. I saw no less than 50 people – children AND adults – walking around rocking these hats. And when you’re here, you think nothing of it. But have you ever… EVER seen anyone wear one out in public? Say, at the grocery store or Home Depot? I’ve never been to Red Lobster and seen a man ordering his dinner while wearing an enormous pointy Sorcerer’s Apprentice hat. These hats cost 25 bucks each. Where do they go when you’re home from your trip and you’ve purchased one? The closet? Under the bed? After the pixie dust wears off, are you like, “crap, NOW what am I supposed to do with this?” Because I’m pretty sure that’s what I’d be saying. Only, not about the big black and white stovetop Jack Skellington hat I’m gonna buy. THAT bad boy will go with ANYthing.
When you wish upon a star,
The Niemeyers
